The risk factors are many:<br \/>\nphysical, organisational and individual. The increasing burden of MSD<br \/>\nis important and expensive not only for the workers but also for the<br \/>\nenterprises and for the society.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Many workers are<br \/>\nsuffering from MSD as still shown by the last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurofound.europa.eu\/surveys\/ewcs\/2010\/index.htm\" title=\"EWCS 2010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Working<br \/>\nCondition Survey (EWCS) of 2010<\/a> (Eurofound): nearly one in two are<br \/>\nsuffering of low back pain, four in ten of muscular pain in upper<br \/>\nlimbs and one in three in lower limbs. MSD affect workers in all<br \/>\nsectors, men and women and are increasing with age.  This EWCS 2010<br \/>\nshows that a lot of work constraints are existing with a high<br \/>\npercentage of workers exposed to these constraints, and especially to<br \/>\nbiomechanical factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Even if it is<br \/>\ndifficult for each enterprise to evaluate costs of MSD, these costs<br \/>\nare often very high and can be divided in direct cost (absenteeism,<br \/>\nloss of productivity and\/or of quality, increasing of the workload<br \/>\nfor the colleagues not yet suffering of a MSD\u2026) and indirect costs<br \/>\n(loss of knowledge, of skills, turn-over\u2026) which can be estimated<br \/>\nto 2 to 3 times the direct costs. For example, a report on<br \/>\nabsenteeism in Belgium evaluates the cost of one absence day to 924\u20ac.<br \/>\nThis report shows that the absenteeism is increasing more and more<br \/>\neach year, with on average 6 days of absence per worker and per day<br \/>\nfor a total annual cost in Belgium estimated to 10.8 Billion \u20ac.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The costs for the<br \/>\nsociety are also very high and increasing: health care, disabled<br \/>\npeople, occupational diseases compensation\u2026Examples taken in<br \/>\nFrance, in Belgium and in Netherlands show the main part taken by MSD<br \/>\nin occupational diseases. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/osha.europa.eu\/en\/publications\/reports\/TERO09009ENC\" title=\"Work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the EU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU-OSHA report 2010<\/a>, MSD<br \/>\nrepresented nearly 40% of occupational diseases in Europe in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\">To help people and<br \/>\nespecially the enterprises to realize this incredible burden of MSD<br \/>\nlinked to the working conditions, we need a specific legislation to<br \/>\ngive more visibility to MSD. But more essentially we need an European<br \/>\nOSH strategy to prevent MSD for the workers not yet affected, to<br \/>\nallow workers already suffering of MSD to stay longer at work but<br \/>\nalso to help people to come back to work after a long absence due to<br \/>\nMSD. An ergonomic approach of the prevention ie a global approach of<br \/>\nall the risk factors, with the workers\u2019 participation to better<br \/>\nadapt the working conditions seems the only solution to get an<br \/>\neffective MSD prevention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/social\/main.jsp?catId=88&amp;langId=en&amp;eventsId=940&amp;moreDocuments=yes&amp;tableName=events&amp;typeId=92\" title=\"Events\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Jump to event page<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels, December 2013<\/p>\n<div>European Commission &#8211;
