SELF 2025

SELF Congress and Activities: 2024 and Beyond

2025 SELF Congress: Save the Date

The next SELF Congress will take place from July 2 to July 4, 2025, at Paris Nanterre University.

Theme: Ergonomics, Community(ies), and Society: Between Legacies and Perspectives

In a rapidly transforming societal context—shaped by technological, social, economic, political, and environmental changes—ergonomics continues to evolve. The 2025 congress will explore how these transformations influence the principles, concepts, methods, and practices of ergonomics, while addressing the growing diversity within the field.

The congress will focus on two main axes:

  1. Interplay Between Activity Ergonomics and Society
This axis will examine how ergonomics principles have evolved alongside societal changes, their reciprocal influence, and how they shape current practices. Discussions will also address emerging challenges and new perspectives for the discipline.
  2. Ergonomics Community(ies): Structure and Dynamics
Topics will include the evolution of ergonomics education, the role of interdisciplinary collaboration, and how specialization impacts the profession’s structure and networks.

Additional contributions are welcome on the ten transversal themes of SELF congresses.

International Conference on Safety and Innovation

We are pleased to announce the International Conference on Safety and Innovation, organized by INAIL in collaboration with the ISSA Section Machine and System Safety. The event will be held from March 11th – 13th, 2025, at INAIL, Piazzale Giulio Pastore 6, Roma.

The conference will focus on the following key topics:

  • Innovative Technologies for Safety: Exploring cutting-edge technologies designed to enhance safety in the workplace. We invite papers discussing new solutions that improve safety during work activities or reduce risks through design innovations.
  • Safety of Innovative Products: Examining the safety aspects of new technologies integrated into products such as machinery, plants, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Submissions should address how these innovations comply with safety regulations and identify gaps in standardization.
  • Innovative Systems for Specialist Training: Evaluating new training systems, including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality tools. We seek papers that analyze these technologies’ effectiveness compared to traditional training methods and discuss various national protocols and guidelines.
  • Workspace Safety: Addressing the design of workspaces to ensure safe working conditions. We welcome papers that present innovative design solutions and examine how workspace design influences worker behaviour and skills.
  • Safety of Living Environments and Human Settlements: Investigating methods for detecting and mitigating pollution and predictive control of structures and facilities to prevent widespread risks. Papers should focus on innovative techniques for monitoring and controlling human settlements and living environments.
  • Systems for Inclusive Safety: Focusing on creating inclusive safety systems that accommodate diverse needs, including gender differences, an ageing population, and disabilities. We encourage papers that explore technical solutions and design strategies for tools, equipment, and training that promote safety and inclusion in the workplace.

The first deadline for abstract submissions is August 30th, 2024. For further information on the topics and the Call for Papers, please visit INAIL’s event page.

Workshop: Technology for Co-working on Health and Active Life

Technology → Ergonomics → OH → health care → AAL

June 13th 2024, Virtual (link will be provided)

The workshop’s subject is to bring together researchers and practitioners of several disciplines working on concepts to enable the transition of European societies towards healthy and active lives.

Topics of the workshop:

  • Introduction to the concept (format of collaboration)
  • Actual challenges in healthcare
  • “New” approach: Community health care → Co-working on health → Active life
  • Focus on the AAL domain – concepts of agile development
  • Data – need of data and data structures (open data)
  • Integrated learning Approach
  • Joint Cognitive Systems (JCS) Approach
  • Relevant aspects of Ergonomics
  • Management of change

Overall Subject: The healthcare systems in the European regions are in transition. The key to successfully implementing this demanding change is the wise integration of innovative processes in primary care, competence improvement strategies, and the use of technology.

Together with partners in research and practice, KOHS is developing a new format of interdisciplinary collaboration. The idea is to foster activities in communities of health care, ergonomics, occupational health, and technology research.

Topics of the workshop will address actual demands in health care (secondary users), applications of technology to meet these demands, technology (focusing on open platforms, open source), and integrated processes to enable co-working on the health of primary users and the health of health care workers (challenges for health care organisations and occupational health (tertiary users)).
